Licence and Safety: What NPN 80143622 Covers and What to Check Before Use

Part 3 of the Dr. Morgan S-Equol Science Series. Read Part 1: What Is S-Equol? and Part 2: The Human Evidence. This article summarizes licence and safety information from the Health Canada product licence record and the Dr. Morgan S-EQUOL PLUS Physician Professional Guide v4. It is for education only and is not medical advice.

The short version

Parts 1 and 2 covered the ingredient and the evidence. This part covers the rules: what licence this product holds from Health Canada, what the licence actually covers, who should ask a health professional first, and which signals mean stop use. This is not marketing language — it is the licence record.

1. Product identity: what's in each capsule

  • S-equol, 10 mg per capsule — direct provision of S-equol (see Part 1)
  • Genistein, 16.7 mg AIE per capsule — also a licensed medicinal ingredient
  • 30 capsules per bottle, 1 capsule daily
  • Population: menopausal and postmenopausal women, 18 years and older, oral use
  • Always follow the current product label

2. NPN 80143622: what this number means

  • Product licence number: NPN 80143622
  • Licence holder: MORGAN NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS Inc.
  • Licensed names: EquoPro® and S-EQUOL PLUS
  • Dosage form: hard capsule, oral
The boundary. An NPN identifies a natural health product licensed under its authorized conditions of use. It is not an endorsement of every possible marketing statement — and that boundary is the one we follow in everything we publish.

3. The licensed use: only what the licence says

Licence wording (verbatim): “May reduce severe and frequent menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes and/or night sweats).”

Three words carry the weight: may (not a guarantee), severe and frequent (not the occasional episode), such as (examples — not an invitation to invent new ones).

Anything beyond this — sleep, mood, bone, cardiovascular claims — is not part of the licensed use, and we do not present it that way anywhere.

4. Before use: three situations to tell apart

Ask a health professional first

  • If mammograms and gynaecological evaluations are not current
  • If you use blood thinners, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), have a liver disorder, or have a history of hormonal or gynaecological disease

Do not use

  • If you have current or past breast cancer or tumours
  • If you are predisposed to breast cancer as described in the licensed record (including abnormal mammogram or biopsy findings, or a family history of breast cancer)

Stop use and ask a doctor if you notice

  • Breast pain, recurrence of menstruation, or uterine spotting
  • Abdominal pain, jaundice, or dark urine

Two more licensed directions: take the product a few hours apart from other medications; allow at least 2 weeks of continuous use before expecting effects, and ask a health professional if use continues beyond 1 year.

5. The practitioner review checklist (from the guide)

  1. Confirm the patient fits the licensed population
  2. Review current medications and other health products
  3. Review breast, gynaecological, and liver history
  4. Apply the licensed cautions, contraindication, and stop-use criteria
  5. Use the original labelled package; preserve lot and expiry information
  6. Document the reason for recommendation and the follow-up plan

This checklist is an educational prompt — not a substitute for professional judgment or the product label.
